Graphic Design Specialist

The Graphic Design Specialist position functions within a team framework to effectively design and produce materials reflecting business needs and target audience for printing, display, online or publication that enhances college image, promotes college services and events, and focuses on enrollment management for Red Deer College.

The position provides graphic design expertise in the implementation of a diverse spectrum of materials for recruitment, promotions, marketing campaigns, communications and special events. Tasks are diverse and time sensitive, requiring a high degree of creative thinking and collaboration. The position also works to ensure all departments follow the RDC brand guidelines and maintain a strong brand.

Job Duties
Responsibilities of the Graphic Design Specialist include:

Create and Maintain RDC Brand Standards

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications team to update Brand Standards and to determine the necessity of new or additional Brand Standards
  • Create visual components relevant to new or existing Brand Standards
  • Ensure all creative concepts adhere to brand standards – ensuring consistency and visual recognition by target audiences
  • Develop department and program specific logos (within RDC family) according to Logo Standards
  • Liaise with printers and other external vendors to ensure brand standards are adhered to

Graphic Design Creation

  • Collaborate with Marketing Strategists to review Creative Brief and business goals associated with each project
  • Brainstorm with Marketing Strategists to identify types of collateral (traditional and online) required for each project
  • Work with entire Marketing & Communications team to ensure all projects are completed and delivered on time, utilizing production schedules agreed upon by requesting departments and Marketing & Communications team
  • Interpret written Creative Brief and convert to create visual concepts and designs that meet business goals, reach intended target audiences, and conform to all necessary production specifications and final presentation (i.e. traditional and online media and other collateral)
  • Research RDC and online photo sources for appropriate photos for collateral
  • Provide rationale and strategy for design choices made for each project completed

Visual Design for Digital and Online Media

  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications Strategists to develop messages and create graphics for RDC LCD Screens and Readerboard
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communication Strategists to develop online ads
  • Collaborate with Communications Coordinator and Communications Strategists to develop messages and create graphics for RDC website and Social Media

Graphic Design Administration

  • Research best practices in design principles and trends to ensure RDC collateral remains current
  • Maintain and update projects files of produced materials
  • Complete administration associated with purchasing photos from online sources
  • Maintain a catalogue system for RDC photos
  • Coordinate distribution of RDC logos to internal and external clients when requested

Required Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of post-secondary training, completion of a community college certificate including trades apprenticeships or equivalent in Art; Fine Arts; Graphic Design for Print and Web; Communication Arts – Advertising/Public Relations with a strong emphasis on graphic design or related area
  • Over 3 years related experience

Ability to:

  • Translate/Convert business requirements into creative solutions
  • Create visual solutions to communication problems or goals
  • Work independently and under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate flexibility; ability to multi-task, adapt to changing priorities and to prioritize projects
  • Work proficiently in a MAC based environment

Excellent working knowledge in:

  • Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • The position must keep current with software as it updates/changes frequently
  • Adobe Acrobat – including creating PDF’s for print and web
  • FTP sites – posting and downloading (transferring files)
  • Design to print process – including initial concepts, mockups, proofs, final layouts and print management. Print management includes preparing the project to be press ready and problem-solving to ensure issues with internal and external print shops are resolved.
  • Current design trends – strong eye for detail
  • Various file formats and their uses

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four (4) year undergraduate degree, or three (3) year undergraduate degree plus one full additional year of University in a related program representing four years of study or equivalent in Art; Fine Arts; Graphic Design for Print and Web; Communication Arts – Advertising/Public Relations with a strong emphasis on graphic design or related area.

Salary or Hourly?

$54,594.90 annually

Benefits and Compensation Information
An additional 15% of the hourly rate in lieu of vacation, statutory holidays and benefits.
