CBC Edmonton is looking for a dynamic and digital savvy Director of Journalism and Programming to oversee all news content, radio current affairs, performance programming, and specials, based in
Edmonton, Alberta. Reporting to the Senior Managing Director in Vancouver, you will be the face of CBC Edmonton and the most senior leader in the location. You will be required to operate and manage with little to no direct oversight. You’re accountable for the smooth operation of daily programming and long-term goals for the region and facilities. You will be the sole manager for CBC Edmonton with all members (approximately 75 staff) of that component reporting to you. In addition, you will oversee and manage the work of the Communications Manager in Edmonton including the promotion of CBC Edmonton and its programming.
As the senior leader for CBC Edmonton region, you will be responsible to develop, implement and oversee short and long range strategic plans for regular daily programs, pilots, short-term projects, and specials ensuring they’re developed with an integrated multi-platform approach. As the leader of this innovative team, you direct the production and editorial flow of programming originating in the Alberta capital, ensuring a coordinated, organized system that strengthens the CBC brand, increases efficiencies and meets established priorities including digital. As the sole, local leader for CBC Edmonton, you will be accountable to the public and the CBC Ombudsman for queries in the local market for Canada’s public broadcaster. You are expected to be an advocate, spokesperson and the public representative of CBC in Edmonton by attending community events. In addition, you will be accountable to organize and execute visits by CBC senior leadership, national dignitaries and high-profile Canadians. You will be responsible for all editorial, human and financial resources.
This role is integral in changing how people connect to CBC at the local level. This means deepening our original and enterprise storytelling and ensuring we are talking about what matters most to people in Edmonton. Because you are fearless, you won’t shape the editorial agenda, you will set it. Not only what we cover, but how we cover it and how it rolls out on all platforms. You will have a proven ability to set a successful news strategy. You’re innovative and will try new things, new work flows and new story treatments. You will set a new benchmark in editorial leadership around community stories. You are a strategic thinker who can find creative solutions to any challenge.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
- University degree.
- Ten years related experience within the broadcast industry.
- Advanced leadership skills are required to inspire and direct creative, self-motivated staff.
- Knowledge of current affairs and news, performance programming, and law as it relates to broadcasting.
- Knowledge and understanding of social, cultural, political issues, events, and trends.
- Demonstrated knowledge of in-depth knowledge of multi-platform programming
- Strong understanding of CBC’s journalistic programming, financial, human resource practices/policies and collective agreement(s) is important.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, in addition to cultural sensitivity and awareness.
- Critical thinking and the ability to make decisions rapidly under pressure without direct supervision.
