Position Title: Freelance Web & Print Graphic Designer

Job Type: Short-term contract, with possibility of extension

Location: Remote

Start Date: July 1, 2024

Salary Range: $2,400-$3,200/month

 

Position Summary

Are you a detailed-oriented and creative person who is passionate about web design, print design, and the visual arts? Are you skilled in Figma and InDesign? Are you comfortable with WordPress content management? Are you successful at working with templates and an established brand? We’d like to hear from you!

The Art Canada Institute (ACI) is a dynamic not-for-profit organization whose mission is to bring Canadian art and its history to a broad public audience regardless of one’s proximity to a bricks-and-mortar museum. We are looking for a self-motivated Freelance Web & Print Graphic Designer for a short-term contract position (2 to 3 days a week for 3-4 months). The organization is undergoing an exciting rebrand of the website and we require a designer experienced in Figma to take pages from the existing website and create updated layouts based on the new branding and page templates provided by our design firm.

We are also looking for a reliable freelance print and digital designer to take on additional ad hoc design contracts. ACI takes pride in its exceptionally designed print and digital art resources. We need a professional designer with a strong eye for detail who could layout webpages and design print books, brochures, newsletters, and other marketing materials that reflect ACI’s well-established brand.

The ideal candidate is a Figma and InDesign wizard, extremely organized, and able to manage and meet multiple deadlines. They have a creative mindset and the ability to visualize how content will fit into an existing design-system and brand.

Skills

High-level of proficiency in:

  • Figma
  • InDesign
  • Photoshop (specifically for image correction, colour profile management, file type conversion)

 

These skills are an asset:

  • Familiarity with WordPress content management
  • Adobe Acrobat
  • Microsoft 365 suite
  • Asana project management

 

Short-term contract responsibilities

Figma:

  • Populate the new webpage templates with actual content based on the existing website and/or content provided
  • Use the module library to create new templates for pages from the existing site
  • Where needed provide a recorded example of page animations / functionality or be prepared present on this aspect

 

Future contract responsibilities

InDesign:

  • Design brochures, website banners, digital and print event invitations, and other digital and print marketing materials

Photoshop:

  • Prepare and edit images, illustrations, and other visual elements either for print or web (file conversion, image compression, colour profile management, light colour correction, preparing book mock-ups, etc.)

WordPress:

  • Effectively and dynamically layout long-format articles and books, expertly combining text and images, in WordPress (pure content management, no development or HTML required)

 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate or masters degree in Graphic Design (or equivalent work experience)
  • Min 3+ years of design experience (Freelancing, Agency, or In-house)
  • Knowledge of visual design principles, typography, colour theory, and best practices
  • High-level of proficiency in Photoshop and InDesign
  • Ability to use Acrobat for proofreading mark-up and pre-flight checks
  • Proficiency in WordPress content management (creating new pages, laying out long articles with images, laying out dynamic content like videos and page animations)
  • Strong eye for detail and ability to check and proof your own material
  • Ability to properly prepare print materials for press (properly assigning or converting to colour profiles, doing pre-press checks, converting image file types, etc.)
  • Strong, dynamic portfolio showcasing creativity and versatility
  • Ability or willingness to learn other programs such as Canva, Mailchimp, or iMovie
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Strong client-service mindset
  • Adapt well to feedback and effectively manage revisions and project deliveries
  • Ability to multi-task and to successfully manage multiple priorities, familiarity with Asana project management software an asset
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft 365 Suite, Teams, Adobe Acrobat, and Outlook
